A Site-Specific Performance by Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts

Sonnet of Samsara

Jayachandran Palazhy, Artistic Director of Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, reflects on 'Sonnet of Samsara'—a production that captures the spirit of our time through a dynamic fusion of movement, technology, and contemporary expression

"Sonnet of Samsara" is a groundbreaking, site-specific performance that explores the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Blending Kalaripayattu martial arts, contemporary dance, live music, and community-created art, this immersive production adapts to unique landscapes, inviting audiences to walk alongside performers in a ritualistic procession. Commissioned by Serendipity Arts Festival and supported by the British Council, it bridges local stories with global themes of sustainability and interconnectedness.

  • Immersive Experience: Audience becomes part of the procession.
  • Site-Specific: Adapts to outdoor/indoor venues (parks, heritage sites, festivals).

  • Myth & Memory: Weaves local narratives and hidden histories through symbolic art.
  • Dynamic Fusion: Blends traditional martial arts and contemporary dance in a ritualized finale.

t's incredible to see the silks being choreographed from the basis of Kalarippayattu. So, a kind of movement that I've never seen before in my career. So a real privilege to work with these incredible dancers and it's been um fantastic to see the development of Attakkalari over the last 30 years. I remember being at the very early stages of it with Jay’s vision to use Kalarippayattu in a contemporary movement piece and Sonnet of Samsara most definitely does that. It's an honour to be part of the team."
